Solo Advanced Taoist 60 min

Microcosmic Orbit

A longer Taoist energy practice for circulating warmth up the spine and down the front of the body. Best for practitioners with prior breath and meditation experience.

Intention

The Microcosmic Orbit is a classical Taoist circuit. Warmth gathered at the lower belly is drawn through the perineum, up the spine, over the crown, and down the front of the body, then folded back into the lower belly. Sexual heat at the root is not discarded. It is included in the circuit and circulated upward. It is a long practice. It rewards patience and a quiet room.

Start when you're ready

One phase at a time, with timers.

Microcosmic Orbit

5 min

Container

Sit on a cushion, spine upright, knees lower than hips. Soft eyes, tongue resting against the upper palate (this closes the circuit). Hands resting on the thighs, palms up. Perineum lightly engaged, as if holding a small breath there without clenching.

12 min

Gather at the lower belly

Slow belly breath. On each inhale, warmth gathers two inches below the navel. On each exhale, soften the pelvic floor and let warmth stay. Continue until the lower belly feels distinctly warm, full, or subtly turned on. Do not rush this. The gathering must be felt in the body before you move on.

15 min

Up the back channel

On the inhale, draw warmth from the lower belly to the perineum, then up the spine: sacrum, low back, mid back, between the shoulder blades, base of the skull, crown. Pause at the crown for two breaths. Notice tingling, heat, or a faint inner current. If the warmth stalls, breathe at the place it stops rather than forcing.

13 min

Down the front channel

On the exhale, let warmth descend from the crown, down the face, through the tongue and into the throat, sternum, solar plexus, pubic bone, and back to the lower belly. Pause for one breath at the lower belly. Notice whether arousal spreads rather than concentrates.

10 min

Three complete orbits

Continue: up the back, over the crown, down the front, into the belly. Each orbit one full breath if possible, otherwise several. Three complete orbits. On the third descent, let warmth and any erotic charge settle in the belly instead of seeking release.

5 min

Close

Place both palms over the lower belly: men, left palm under right; women, right palm under left. Sit in stillness for two minutes, storing warmth. Then rub the palms warm and brush them slowly down the face and chest before opening the eyes.

After the Ritual

  • Avoid cold drinks for an hour.
  • Walk slowly for five minutes before doing anything else.
  • If a sensation lingers in the belly the next day, that is the practice continuing.

Ready when you are

The player keeps the time and gives you one phase at a time, so you can practise instead of reading. No account needed.

FAQ

How long does a Microcosmic Orbit sitting take?

60 minutes, in 6 timed phases. The length is the practice rather than an accident of it: warmth has to be felt gathering before it will travel anywhere, and a circuit hurried is a circuit imagined. The longest phase, "Up the back channel", runs 15 minutes and the shortest runs 5, so a sitting has a shape you can plan an evening around instead of an open ended sit. If you have less time than that today, sit with a shorter practice whole rather than with this one halved.

Is the Microcosmic Orbit suitable for beginners?

This version assumes prior breath or meditation practice: an hour of seated circulation asks for a steadiness that takes time to build. If the circuit is new to you, start with the Inner Smile, which teaches the same gathering of warmth in thirteen minutes, and return here when sitting feels settled.

Does the Microcosmic Orbit use sexual energy?

Yes, and that is what sets this version apart from a purely meditative one. Most guides to the circuit treat the warmth as spiritual or health energy alone. Here the heat gathered at the root is not something to rise above: it is drawn into the same loop and circulated with the rest, up the spine and down the front of the body. You do not need arousal to begin, and nothing here is aimed at release. The heat at the base is simply included rather than set aside, which is why the practice can feel grounded and quietly alive at once.

Why does the tongue rest on the upper palate?

In the Taoist framing it joins the back channel to the front one, completing the loop the practice circulates warmth around. Practically, it also keeps the jaw soft and gives the attention a physical anchor at the top of the descent.

What if the warmth stalls somewhere along the spine?

Breathe at the place it stops rather than forcing past it. Stalling at the same point session after session is common, and patience there is the practice. If nothing moves at all, return to gathering at the lower belly until the warmth is unmistakable before drawing it up again.
