When you're ready

Sensory Threshold

Phase 1 of 6

Prepare the room

Warm the room. Soft lighting, candle at floor level if at night. Place water, a piece of fruit, and one fragrant object (oil, flower, incense) within reach. Stand for one minute with eyes closed and name, silently, that you are crossing into a private ritual.

Phase 2 of 6

Sight

Sit comfortably. Let your eyes rest on one beautiful object in the room. Look without naming. Notice color, shadow, edge, and the small pleasure of simply seeing. If the mind narrates, return to the object.

Phase 3 of 6

Sound

Close your eyes. Listen to the layer of sound furthest from you, then the closest layer, then your own breath. Notice silence between sounds. Optional: one low hum on the exhale, feeling vibration in the chest and lips.

Phase 4 of 6

Smell and taste

Bring the fragrant object slowly to your nose. Three slow inhales, letting scent reach the back of the throat. Then take one small bite of fruit and let it rest on the tongue before chewing. Notice sweetness, temperature, and whether the mouth wants to smile.

Phase 5 of 6

Touch

If you have oil, warm a drop between the palms first. Run your own palm slowly along the inside of the opposite arm, from wrist to shoulder. Then along the side of the neck, then the heart. Move slower than feels natural. Match each stroke to one exhale.

Phase 6 of 6

Close

Hands rest on the belly. Three rounds of slow breath. Notice which sense feels most awake now, and where in the body that aliveness lives.

Coming back

After the ritual

  • Stay slow for the next twenty minutes if you can.
  • Eat something warm.
  • Notice once during the day whether a sense you woke up is still listening.
