Couple Advanced Taoist 90 min

Shared Energy Circulation

A longer Taoist-inspired practice for couples who already have a meditation or breath practice and want to circulate energy between two bodies.

Intention

Drawn from Mantak Chia's couple practices, this ritual treats the two bodies as a single circuit. Warmth gathered at the root is exchanged through the hands, the eyes, the breath, and close contact. Sexual charge is included, not discarded: it is circulated upward rather than discharged quickly. Best for couples with prior solo energy practice and an unhurried evening.

Shared Energy Circulation

10 min

Container

Warm room. Two cushions and a blanket nearby. Soft lighting; candles only at night. Each partner drinks a small glass of warm water before beginning.

15 min

Each gathers alone

Sit back to back, spine to spine. Each partner gathers privately: slow belly breath, attention at the lower belly and perineum, warmth building behind the navel. Spines touching share the gathering subtly. Continue until each feels the lower belly clearly warm or subtly turned on.

10 min

Turning to face

Turn to face each other, knees touching. Each places one palm on their own lower belly, the other on their partner's lower belly. Match the breath. On the inhale, draw warmth from your belly into your partner's. On the exhale, receive warmth back.

15 min

Eye and breath circuit

Open the eyes and settle into the left eye of your partner. On your inhale, breathe in what they exhale. On your exhale, send breath back into them. A continuous loop, no pause, for fifteen minutes. If this becomes too intense, lower the gaze briefly and return.

20 min

Yab-yum hold

Come into yab-yum: one partner cross-legged, the other in their lap, legs wrapped. Foreheads touching, palms on hearts. Continue the breath circuit. Imagine warmth rising up both spines together, over both crowns, down both fronts, through the genitals, into both bellies. A single shared orbit.

15 min

Lying down close

Move into lying together, full body contact on your sides or face to face. Stay there in silence. If sexual contact emerges, let it be slow: still penetration, external touch, or held grinding without chasing orgasm. If orgasm approaches, breathe upward and soften the pelvic floor before deciding whether to release. If sex does not emerge, holding is enough.

5 min

Close

Sit up together. Each places their palms over their own lower belly for one minute of quiet. One sentence each: what your body knows about your partner now that it did not at the start.

After the Ritual

  • Stay close and warm for at least an hour.
  • Eat something simple and warm together.
  • Do not check phones for the rest of the day.
  • Notice during the week whether warmth in your own belly comes back when you think of your partner.

Ready when you both are

The player keeps the time and gives you one phase at a time, so you can both practise instead of reading. No account needed.

This ritual was written for everyone

Yours would be written from your own answers: the time you have, what you would like more of, what you would rather leave out. It starts with a few questions.

FAQ

How does the energy actually move between two people?

Through four ordinary channels the ritual opens in turn: matched breath, palms resting on each other's lower belly, the gaze settled in one eye, and long skin contact in the seated hold. Nothing mystical is asked of either of you. You are lending each other rhythm and warmth, and the sequence is arranged so each channel opens while the one before it is still working.

Ninety minutes is longer than any energy exercise we have tried. Is there a shorter version?

Not by trimming this one. The phases are timed so that each channel is still working when the next one opens, and the fifteen minutes each of you spends gathering alone is what gives the exchange something to exchange. If ninety minutes is not the evening you have, two shorter practices in the library take one channel at a time: the Eye-Gazing Threshold is twenty minutes on the gaze, and Yab-Yum Stillness is forty-five on the seated hold. Both are complete on their own.

Do we both need previous practice before trying this?

It helps considerably. The ritual assumes each partner can gather warmth alone with breath and attention, which is what a solo practice like the Inner Smile or the Microcosmic Orbit teaches. Without that, the ninety minutes tend to become waiting for a sensation nobody has learned to find.

What if we do not feel energy moving between us?

Stay with what is verifiably there: warmth where the bodies touch, the shared rhythm of breath, the weight of a palm. The circuit imagery is scaffolding for attention, not a test to pass. Couples usually notice the exchange as ordinary warmth and closeness first, and subtler sensation later, if at all.

Is this practice sexual?

It includes sexual charge without requiring sex. Arousal is circulated upward rather than discharged quickly, and if slow contact emerges in the lying-down phase it stays unhurried. If it does not emerge, the holding is the complete practice. Both endings are written into the ritual.
